Book 5 Reading Test 4 · Passage 3 · Questions 27–40
This guide reviews the adapted questions on this website. Wording and answers can differ from the original paper.
The passage considers light both as a timing signal and as an energy source for plant growth. It discusses breeding, flowering, day length, unusual life cycles and photosynthetic rates. Keeping these functions separate prevents a fact about reproduction from being used to answer a question about growth.

How to approach this passage
- Divide notes into timing and growth. Photoperiod can act as a seasonal signal; photosynthesis concerns the use of light energy to build organic material.
- Track the individual examples. Birds, desert annuals, bamboo and eastern hemlock illustrate different claims, so a detail about one should not be generalised to every organism.
- For the sentence gaps, find the named organism or setting first. Then copy the precise cue, food source or classification term within the three-word limit.
- Day-neutral plants flower regardless of photoperiod. In adapted Question 35, day-neutral and day-neutral plants are accepted, but adding a different plant category changes the meaning.
Worked review example
Question 35 explicitly describes plants whose flowering does not depend on photoperiod. The passage names this category day-neutral. That definition is the evidence; knowing that many other plants respond to long or short days does not answer this gap.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not equate an unpredictable temperature with an unpredictable day length. The passage contrasts the reliability of these cues.
