Book 5 Reading Test 3 · Passage 2 · Questions 14–26
This guide reviews the adapted questions on this website. Wording and answers can differ from the original paper.
The passage examines erosion in the Nile delta and explains why dams alone do not account for the problem. Irrigation, sediment movement and the changing contents of the silt are part of the causal chain. Read for how the explanation develops, rather than looking only for the word delta.

How to approach this passage
- Give each paragraph a one-sentence purpose before selecting a heading. A paragraph about disruption to a natural process needs a broader heading than one naming a single location.
- Separate an observation from a proposed cause. Erosion occurring before the dams were built does not prove that dams had no later effect.
- Track where sediment travels: the river, irrigation canals, lagoons and coast are distinct locations. Questions about water or sediment in one location cannot be answered from another without a stated connection.
- For Questions 24–26, use letters from the list A–H. Distinguish a harmful substance in the silt from proposed short-term flooding and longer-term changes to water flow.
Worked review example
The adapted summary contrasts pollutants in the silt with possible responses. Before choosing a letter, identify whether the gap asks for a problem, an intervention or a water route. Matching that role prevents selecting sediment simply because it appears repeatedly in the text.
Common mistake to avoid
An earlier explanation being incomplete is not the same as the writer saying it is wholly false. Read the qualifications around claims about the Aswan dams.
