IELTS Listening Spelling Rules: Do You Lose Marks?
Quick answer: Yes. In IELTS Listening a misspelled answer is marked wrong, so you lose that mark completely. There is no half mark. British and American spellings are both accepted, and you can write in capital or small letters. Plurals must match the sentence. Learn the spellings of common topic words, days, months and numbers, because these appear often in Listening answers.

Do you lose marks for spelling in IELTS Listening?
Yes. IDP's article on common IELTS spelling mistakes states that words with spelling mistakes in the Reading and Listening tests are marked as incorrect. Each question is worth one mark, so one wrong letter can cost you a full mark.
This matters more than many candidates expect. Two or three spelling errors can move your Listening score down by half a band. For example, around 30 correct answers is about Band 7, while 28 is about Band 6.5 (approximate; the exact conversion can vary slightly between test versions).
The official answer rules at a glance
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Spelling must be correct | A misspelled word is a wrong answer, even if the meaning is clear. |
| British or American spelling | Both are accepted: "colour" or "color", "centre" or "center". |
| Capital letters | Answers can be written in upper or lower case. |
| Plurals | Must fit the sentence grammatically. If the gap needs "tickets", "ticket" is wrong. |
| Word limit | Writing more words than allowed makes the answer wrong. |
| Hyphenated words | Count as one word, such as "check-in". |
The British Council's guide Is IELTS British or American? confirms that British and American spellings are accepted and scored equally in Listening, Reading and Writing. The rule on hyphenated words comes from the ielts.org Listening format page.
Can I mix British and American spelling?
For a single Listening answer, either spelling is accepted. In Writing, the British Council advises being consistent within your tasks where you can, and IDP gives similar advice. The simplest habit is to choose one style and use it throughout the whole test.
What if a name is spelled out in the recording?
In some questions, especially in Part 1, a speaker spells a name or street letter by letter. You must write exactly what you hear. Practise the English alphabet aloud, especially letters that are easy to confuse:
- A, E and I
- G and J
- B, P, D and T
- M and N
- "double" letters, for example "double L" means LL
Also practise hearing numbers that sound alike, such as 13 and 30, 15 and 50, and 19 and 90.

Worked examples: right or wrong?
Gap: The tour includes a visit to the old ______. (NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS)
Audio: "...and then we stop at the old harbour."
- "harbour" correct (British spelling)
- "harbor" correct (American spelling)
- "HARBOUR" correct (capitals are fine)
- "harber" wrong (misspelled)
- "the harbour" wrong here, because "the" is already in the sentence and the answer no longer fits ("the old the harbour")
Gap: Visitors should bring two ______. (ONE WORD ONLY)
Audio: "You'll need a couple of passport photos."
- "photos" correct
- "photo" wrong (the plural is needed after "two")
- "passport photos" wrong (two words, over the limit)
How to improve your spelling for IELTS Listening
- After every practice test, write each misspelled answer correctly five times and add it to a personal list.
- Do a weekly dictation: ask a friend, or use a recording, to read 20 words from your list.
- Learn word families together, such as "environment", "environmental" and "environmentally".
- On the computer test, check each typed answer carefully during the two-minute review. Do not count on any spell checker. IDP's guide on how to improve your spelling warns that on the computer test you must be very careful with your typing, because typing errors count as spelling mistakes.
Practise now: Test your spelling under real conditions with Listening Test 1, Test 2, Test 3 or Test 4, and check every answer letter by letter.
Frequently asked questions
Is a spelling mistake in IELTS Listening a wrong answer?
Yes. IDP states that words with spelling mistakes in Listening and Reading are marked as incorrect. There is no partial mark for an answer that is nearly right.
Are American spellings accepted in IELTS Listening?
Yes. The British Council says British and American spellings are both accepted and scored equally, for example colour or color.
Do capital letters matter in IELTS Listening answers?
No. Answers can be written in upper or lower case, so London, london and LONDON are all accepted.
Do I lose marks for a missing plural s?
Yes, if the sentence needs a plural. Answers must fit the sentence grammatically, so writing ticket where tickets is needed makes the answer wrong.
Does the computer-delivered test have spell check?
We could not find an official statement either way. IDP warns that typing errors count as spelling mistakes on the computer test, so check every typed answer yourself during the two-minute review at the end.
Is a hyphenated word counted as one word?
Yes. The ielts.org Listening format page says hyphenated words such as check-in count as single words.
