Which six Listening mock tests can you take for free?
Every mock test follows the IELTS Listening format: four parts and 40 questions, and in the real exam you hear each recording once only. The table shows the topic of each part, the length of the video and where you can take the test.
| Mock test | Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Length | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Book 1, Test 1) | Cycle hire booking form | Wetland centre volunteer talk | Student project on food waste | History of street lighting | About 25 min | Website and YouTube |
| 2 (Book 1, Test 2) | Community hall room booking | Ashcombe Mill talk and site plan | Tourism survey report | Seed banks | About 23 min | Website and YouTube |
| 3 (Book 1, Test 3) | Removals company quote | Wetland centre talk for new volunteers | Research project on note-taking | Noise pollution in the ocean | About 24 min | Website and YouTube |
| 4 (Book 1, Test 4) | Walking holiday booking form | Science museum reopening | Survey of local shops | The natural ice trade | About 21 min | Website and YouTube |
| 5 (Book 2, Test 1) | Children's sports camp registration | Country park talk with map | Student project on clothes-swap events | History of salt | About 25 min | YouTube only |
| 6 (Book 2, Test 2) | Pet hotel booking form | Brantwood Valley heritage railway | Students discuss city beekeeping | History of the umbrella | About 24 min | YouTube only |
All six tests suit both IELTS Academic and General Training, because the Listening test is the same for both. You can find the videos on our YouTube channel. Each video title includes "IELTS Listening" and the number of the mock test.
Should you take the mock test on YouTube or on this website?
Both versions use the same recordings for Mock Tests 1 to 4. The difference is how you write and check your answers.
| Feature | Website (Tests 1 to 4) | YouTube (Tests 1 to 6) |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | On the page, next to answer boxes | All 40 questions on screen |
| How you answer | Type into the answer boxes | Write on paper |
| Checking | "Check answers" gives a mark out of 40 | Check against an answer key afterwards |
| Chapters | One recording with all four parts | Clickable chapters for each part |
| Best for | Practising for the computer test | Practising for handwritten answers |
If you are taking IELTS on computer, use the website version so you get used to typing your answers. The YouTube version is still useful for extra practice, especially Mock Tests 5 and 6.
How do you take a Listening mock test like the real exam?
- Use headphones and sit somewhere quiet. Have a pen and paper ready if you are using YouTube.
- Do not pause the video or the audio player. You hear each part once only in the exam.
- Use the short reading time before each part to underline key words and predict the type of answer.
- Write your answers while you listen. On the computer test you get 2 minutes at the end to review your answers, so do not leave everything until the end.
- Mark the test straight away and record your score, the date and the mistakes you made.
Sample: Mock Test 5, Part 1 with answers
Part 1 of Mock Test 5 is a phone call to book a place at Kestrel Sports Camps. The task is a registration form, and you write no more than two words and/or a number for each answer. Watch Part 1 on YouTube first, then check your answers here.
| Question | Form line | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Name: Oliver …… | Kerridge |
| 2 | Age on first day of camp | 10 / ten |
| 3 | Week beginning …… August | 11(th) / eleventh |
| 4 | Main activity | climbing |
| 5 | Allergy | eggs |
| 6 | Extended day: children can stay until …… p.m. | 5.45 / 5:45 |
| 7 | Price for the week (early booking): £ …… | 165 |
| 8 | Child must bring: a water bottle and a …… | sun hat / sunhat |
| 9 | First morning: parents should go to the …… | sports hall |
| 10 | Photos of the child may be used in the …… only | newsletter |
Why these answers?
Question 1: Greg, who takes the booking, starts to write "K-E-R-I", but Laura corrects him: there are two Rs. Spelling must be exact, so "Keridge" scores zero.
Question 2: Oliver is nine now, but he will be ten when the camp starts. The form asks for his age on the first day, so the answer is 10.
Question 6: Children can stay "until quarter to six". Half past three and half past five are distractors. "Quarter to six" is three words, so write 5.45.
Question 7: The standard price of £180 is a distractor. With the early booking discount, the price is £165.
Every Part 1 answer here has a distractor nearby: a wrong spelling, an old age, a full week, a standard price. This is typical of IELTS Part 1, so train yourself to wait for the final, confirmed detail.
What score do you need, and how do you convert it?
Count one mark for each correct answer, then use this table to estimate your band.
| Approximate band | Listening (correct out of 40) |
|---|---|
| 9 | 39–40 |
| 8.5 | 37–38 |
| 8 | 35–36 |
| 7.5 | 32–34 |
| 7 | 30–31 |
| 6.5 | 26–29 |
| 6 | 23–25 |
| 5.5 | 18–22 |
| 5 | 16–17 |
| 4.5 | 13–15 |
| 4 | 10–12 |
These conversions are approximate; the exact conversion can vary slightly between test versions.
How should you plan six mock tests before your exam?
Six tests are enough for a focused three-week plan. Here is one way to use them.
| Week | Tests | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Mock Tests 1 and 2 | Find your level. Note which part loses you the most marks. |
| Week 2 | Mock Tests 3 and 4 | Work on your weakest part and on spelling and word limits. |
| Week 3 | Mock Tests 5 and 6 | Full exam conditions, with no pausing and no replays. |
Between tests, replay only the sections where you made mistakes and find the words that gave each answer. That review is where most of the learning happens.

Frequently asked questions
How many free IELTS Listening mock tests are there?
There are six. Mock Tests 1 to 4 are on this website and on YouTube. Mock Tests 5 and 6, from Band Ready Book 2, are on YouTube only for now.
Are these Listening mock tests suitable for General Training?
Yes. The IELTS Listening test is the same for Academic and General Training, so all six mock tests suit both.
Can I pause the YouTube mock test?
You can, but you should not if you want a realistic score. In the real exam you hear each recording once only, so play each test straight through.

Take the same tests on this website and press "Check answers" to get a mark out of 40. The links are in the table on this page.
How long does each Listening mock test take?
The videos run for about 21 to 25 minutes. The real Listening test takes about 30 minutes in total.
Are these real IELTS Listening tests?
No. They are original IELTS-style practice tests written for Band Ready. They are not produced or endorsed by IELTS, the British Council, IDP or Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
